‘A Blessing’ – AT&T Provides 500 Free Laptops to Detroiters

The line out the door snaked around the building and down the block. For Detroit high school student Ethan Kent and the hundreds of other families waiting patiently in line, it was a very special Saturday.

That’s because they were in line to receive their very own free laptop, plus a backpack filled with school supplies – all thanks to teamwork between AT&T, Black Tech Saturdays, and Human-I-T.

“Getting this laptop means so much to me because my mom, it was not in her budget to give me a laptop,” said Kent. “Receiving this blessing and getting a laptop for free, AT&T is so nice, and I’m so excited to use it for my schoolwork.”

As part of Detroit Connectivity Day, AT&T recently joined with Human-I-T and Black Tech Saturdays to provide 500 free laptops and backpacks to Detroit residents and families in need as part of a Black Tech Saturdays’ event in the city.

“There are so many Detroiters who don’t have access, but we know these tools, they’re part of our future,” said Johnnie Turnage, Co-Founder, Black Tech Saturdays. “If you don’t have a device right now, you are being left behind. And a big part of what we want to do at Black Tech Saturdays is make sure nobody gets left behind.”

“These laptops will be a game-changer for these Detroit families,” said David Lewis, President, AT&T Michigan. “Connectivity has become a key to nearly every door of opportunity, but millions of Americans still don’t have access to technology or high-speed internet. These laptops will help connect Detroit families to new opportunities in our digital world.”

Detroit Connectivity Day was part of our $5 billion commitment to help close the digital divide by addressing the main barriers to connectivity.
