Upgrading Indiana’s Network for More Connectivity

Everything we do is with connection in mind. More connection means more opportunity and more possibility for cities, counties and states across the country.

In Indiana, we invested nearly $1.9 billion in our network infrastructure from 2019-2023 to connect more people to greater possibility. We’re working to expand access to broadband to as many residents as possible.

Here’s the latest on how we’re making it happen.

Public-Private Projects

November 11, 2024 – Today, we announced that we have been awarded five grants from the State of Indiana’s Next Level Connections (NLC) Round 4 Broadband Grant Program to expand fiber internet access to more than 1,200 homes, businesses, and farms in rural portions of four counties across the state.

Across the five projects, AT&T will invest nearly $2 million to help close the digital divide, with a total of more than $6.5 million in NLC grants being awarded to the company to expand broadband in the communities. Those NLC grants include nearly $4.2 million to expand fiber to 703 customer locations in Greene County and more than $2.3 million to expand fiber to 434 locations in Clinton County. Two NLC grants totaling nearly $75,000 will also help bring fiber to 90 locations in Bartholomew and Warrick Counties.

“We have a long history of connecting Hoosiers, and we are honored to have this opportunity to continue to work with the State of Indiana and these counties on closing the digital divide,” said Bill Soards, President, AT&T Indiana. “Indiana communities large and small deserve high-speed fiber connectivity. We’re excited to begin construction on these projects and bring broadband and all its benefits to more businesses and residents in Indiana.”

This is the second time AT&T has been awarded grants from the State of Indiana’s Next Level Connections Broadband Grant Program. In 2022, AT&T was awarded five grants from Next Level Connections Round 3 to build fiber networks to nearly 6,100 homes, businesses, and farms in parts of nine Indiana counties – projects totaling $13 million.

“We’re thrilled to bring much-needed broadband connectivity to over 700 residents, businesses, and farms in rural areas of Greene County through this public-private project with AT&T,” said Nathan Abrams, President, Greene County Board of Commissioners. “We are living in a digital age, and access to high-speed internet is essential for everything from education to health care to economic development to agriculture.”

In addition to the 10 NLC grant projects, AT&T is also currently working with Delaware County and Lawrence County on public-private partnerships to bring AT&T Fiber to those communities, including four different projects within Lawrence County.

October 11, 2024 – We recently completed our build-out of AT&T Fiber across the city of Martinsville. This $6.3 million public-private project is delivering high-speed connectivity to more than 5,000 homes and businesses across the city.

“This is a significant step forward in our work to close the digital divide in Martinsville,” said Martinsville Clerk Treasurer Ben Merida. “The completion of this project provides increased access to high-speed fiber internet and is a major step towards connecting all residents. We appreciate AT&T’s work to deliver this project on time, their shared commitment to our community, and their efforts to go above and beyond by donating devices to families in need.”

March 28, 2024 – Lawrence County announced a nearly $2.6 million public-private project with AT&T to expand AT&T Fiber to an estimated 530 customer locations in rural areas of the county. AT&T will invest more than $1.6 million and Lawrence County will invest $950,000 in a project that will provide fiber services to residential and businesses addresses in rural areas of west central Lawrence County. This project is expected to be completed by Q2 2026.

“We’re excited to announce our third project with AT&T to continue to expand broadband throughout our county for our families, businesses, and farmers,” said Lawrence County Commissioner Rodney Fish. “We know how crucial fast connectivity is to all aspects of daily life. AT&T has proven to be a great provider to work with, and we look forward to more high-speed broadband being deployed in rural Lawrence County.”

This is the third public-private project announced between AT&T and Lawrence County over the past year. AT&T was selected by the county in May 2023 to build AT&T Fiber to more than 2,300 customer locations in northwestern portions of the county in a project valued at $3.6 million. The company was also selected by the county in September 2023 to build AT&T Fiber to more than 1,200 additional customer locations in a project valued at more than $4.3 million.

January 23, 2024 – In January, we announced the completion of a $4.4 million public-private project to expand broadband access in Boonville – where more than 4,000 new customer locations now have access to fiber-powered broadband to help close the digital divide. This partnership is an example of AT&T’s work with local governments looking to expand broadband access. The city of Boonville contributed nearly $1 million in public funds to the project and AT&T covered the remaining $3.4 million.

“It’s hard to believe this day is already here,” said Boonville Mayor Charlie Wyatt. “AT&T committed to completing this high-speed broadband project across the city on time and on budget, and that’s just what they did. And because they’ve been such a great collaborator, more than 4,000 homes, farms and business will now have the connectivity they need to be successful.”

November 13, 2023 – In late 2023, we completed a public-private fiber build in Vanderburgh County to help deliver high-speed connectivity to more Hoosiers. The $39 million project is now delivering AT&T Fiber to approximately 20,000 customer locations in unincorporated parts of the county, helping close the digital divide.

“Evansville and Vanderburgh County are my home, so I can tell you first-hand how much this new connectivity means to the Hoosiers who live and work here,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Indiana’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. “With fiber broadband like this now covering the community, our residents, business owners and farmers are able to get things done smarter and faster, and that equates to a big boost to our quality of life.”

Fiber Expansion

March 26, 2024 – We proudly shared that AT&T Fiber is available to more than 590,000 residential and business locations in Indiana. This is an increase of 140,000 locations over the last two years. We also have more than 1.8 million strand miles of fiber in Indiana.

New Site Builds

From rural communities to urban areas, our overall wireless voice and data network covers more than 99% of all Americans, including Indiana.

We’re also ramping up performance in high traffic areas, like airports, stadiums and venues, including Lucas Oil Stadium and Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

For less densely populated areas like Rensselaer, North Judson, Montpelier, Greentown, Brookville, and French Lick, we’re expanding our 5G network so people there can have access to reliable connectivity.
